Online Wine specialists in Natural Wines
Natural wines are growing in popularity here in the UK as people are looking for healthier lifestyle options. There is now serious concern about the large quantities of artificial additives added to our food and drink, and the negative effects they can have on our health. There has been a resurgence of naturally produced foods, with farm shops and organic outlets seeing real growth over the last few years.
Unfortunately wine is a lot more complicated as "organic" regulations for wine are confusing. EU Certified Organic wines are permitted to contain over 40 chemical additives including large amounts of sulphites, plus undergo many dubious practices during the actual winemaking, such as reverse osmosis (where virtually everything natural is filtered out under pressure).
As for Biodynamic wines, they are also permitted to add artificial sulphites as a preservative, so being biodynamically certified is no assurance that the wine is any healthier or more natural than any other wine.
So this is where NATURAL wine comes in - for people who are looking for a natural product made without the addition of these potentially harmful chemicals. Although there is no legal definition of natural wine, they are generally wines made without the addition of chemicals, preservatives, added sugars and artificial yeasts. They are made by passionate producers to show the true flavours of the grapes and to reflect the terroir of the vineyard. Many have some small amounts of sulphites added, although some are made without the addition of any sulphites whatsoever.
But while the "natural wines" category appears on the surface to be great for the consumer looking for quality, chemical-free well made wines, as there is no legal definition the category is open to abuse, deliberate or otherwise from producers and retailers looking to increase sales. I know of one website based in London who is selling a "biodynamically" certified range of wines as "natural" although they contain enough added sulphites to cause a potentially fatal reaction in anybody with a sulphite intolerance.
Jane has a severe sulphite allergy which sprang up out of nowhere about 12 years ago, which has nearly killed her on several occassions (technically it did but I revived her 17 times en route to hospital the last time). The medical profession didn't understand the problem and after several years of consultations we were no further along, and non the wiser. She was told simply she couldn't drink alcohol again. So we made our own investigations, and discovered a very important point which is constantly overlooked even today - it is not the alcohol that's the problem, it is the artificial sulphites which are liberally added to most alcoholic drinks (and foods of course).
We were in the drinks wholesale business and expanded into the retail sector with the launch of our website Good Wine Online specialising in quality boutique wines. As these were made on a small scale by passionate producers they tended to be very low in sulphites and Jane could drink them with no ill effects. They are a mile away from the factory produced brands we see on our supermarket shelves, which are pumped full of chemicals. How the EU and UK government bodies can classify hand made wines with no chemicals, and factory produced wines which are predominantly chemicals, as the same drink beggars belief and is the main cause of all the confusion to the consumer.
We have now gone one step further and sourced a range of completely chemical free wines, with no sulphites or any other chemical intervention in the winemaking OR the grape growing. We now have over 40 of these wines. They are extremely healthy for you. In moderation they help combat cancer, heart disease, diabetes, bad cholesterol and a host of other ailments. And the biggest bonus is they are also delicious! Many "natural" wines don't taste too good, and take some adjusting to (to be polite). Most of the whites lack acidity and are partially oxidised. Most are made on such a small scale that they vary wildly from one bottle to the next, let alone one vintage to the next.
We believe we have sourced the best natural wines available. Consistent from bottle to bottle, delicious wines in their own right, with the benefit of being actively good for you. You can browse through them on our main site goodwineonline.co.uk which contains a lot more information.
