Natural wines - The only type of wine you should be drinking for better health
Natural wine is a wine that has been produced with minimal additions of chemicals and intervention of technology. This is different from organic wine in the sense that although they are organically grown, they still may be subject to chemicals, as well as physical manipulation in the winemaking process.
Natural wine can be a confusing term because it holds no legal status and they can be hard to classify and find, to help you we have a few things you should look out for when looking.
Natural wine ideally has the following elements; organically or biodynamically grown, dry-farmed in low yielding vineyards. The grapes of the wine should be hand-picked, with no added sugars, no foreign yeasts, and no foreign bacteria. There should also be no additives for colour, mouth-feel or minerality, as well as no external flavour additives, this includes those from new oak barrels, staves, chips or liquid extracts.
Other traits which they often have is that they have no (or next to none) filtration or fining, no manipulation and minimal or no added sulphites. The degree of each of these qualities will vary from wine to wine, and it is unlikely you will drink a wine which follows all of these. However, this is a general guideline for things you should look for when looking for a natural wine. Just because a wine does not follow all of these traits does not mean that it is not a natural wine.
The benefits of natural wine are that they are less harmful to your general health than wine containing lots of chemicals, particularly sulphites which some people have allergies to.
Drinking natural wines can reduce the risk of headaches and hangovers when drinking in moderation. Natural wines are becoming increasingly popular and easy to find now that more people aware of the negative effects of adding chemicals to food and alcohol.
