French Natural Organic Wine
France is of course world famous for its wine, influencing the international wine industry. This goes too for natural organic wine, and while there are some incredible organic wines to be found and enjoyed from France, there are also some not so good ones.The organic wine industry is growing rapidly in France, with environmental awareness growing more people are considering their effect on the world, in turn heightening the demand for organic wine.
Converting vineyards to organic is a long and slow process, but after a long while of regenerating the soil with liquid manure, biodiversity begins to play a bigger part in the running of the vineyard, with animals and plants returning to call the plantation their home. Insects and birds returning to the vineyard means that they care for the plants as birds and predatory insects kill any pests which may try and devour the precious grapes. Natural herbicides, pesticides and fungicides are sometimes used in moderation, but these work only to improve biodiversity.
Famous wine producer Xavier Planty is the one of the only chateaux in the Bordeux 1855 classification to be certified organic.
The white wine is made from both Semillion and Sauvignon Blanc wines, and traditionally is grown in south-western France; this production now involves absolutely no artificial pesticides, herbicides.
He made the decision to change after a friend of his who spent his entire life adding chemicals to vineyard fields died of cancer. Because of his concern for nature he found the decision quite easy.
The organic wine industry in France in the years between 2007 and 2010 doubled, demonstrating more and more winemakers joining his movement to converting their vineyards to organic! This in turn has affected the worldwide wine market, with organic vineyards appearing more and more in countries such as Australia, Italy, New Zealand and other winemaking countries.
Wines being organic mean that they don’t add all those artificial preservatives and flavour enhancing chemicals such as sulphites which can be harmful, and very dangerous to people with allergies and asthmatics.
